Skiing is an extremely popular activity not only for recreation but also for competition. It is one of the major Winter Olympics sports. Many styles of skiing are popular all over the world. Internationally, the word "skiing" is most likely to connote cross-country skiing, while in the United States, "skiing" usually means Alpine skiing (also known as downhill skiing).
In cross-country skiing, skiers go out on trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. Skiers may choose to do cross-country skiing from a ski resort, which usually maintains its own trails, or to go out for long periods, bringing tents and other equipment.
Alpine skiing is done at ski resorts. Skiers put on warm clothing, bring sets of skis, ski poles, and ski boots, take a chair lift or gondola lift to the top of a slope, and ski downhill, usually along a marked trail called a piste. Ski resorts groom these trails using mechanical equipment to ensure consistency and safety of the skiing surface.
It is also possible to ski in unmarked, ungroomed areas of the ski resort or through the woods outside the ski resort. This is called backcountry or off-piste skiing. Backcountry skiers usually go out looking for areas of newly fallen snow, or powder. In many ski resorts, however, skiing outside the boundaries of the ski resort is prohibited. This prohibition protects skiers from avalanches and eliminates the need for dangerous and costly rescue efforts.
Another form of skiing, called Nordic skiing, is a group of three sports: cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined. In ski jumping, skiers go down an approach jump located on a slope. At the end of the jump is a ramp, from which skiers take off. The object is to cover as long a distance as possible upon taking off. Nordic combined is a combination of cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Nordic skiing is a sport in the Winter Olympics.
Snowboarding is another popular snow sport. It is not precisely a form of skiing because snowboarders use a snowboard instead of skis. In fact, it is more similar to surfing and skateboarding than to skiing. But like skiing, it is enjoyed at ski resorts and is a sport in the Winter Olympics.
Whichever skiing style one prefers, skiing is extremely enjoyable. It creates a feeling that is almost like flying. Skiing is also good for people who enjoy seeing beautiful views and breathing clean air. Many skiers say that the sport helps them achieve a sense of wholeness and harmony.
